Let's consider the option of converting a Nokia 1110 phone into a radio microphone. The conversion begins, naturally, with disassembly. This operation should be considered one of the most important, since improper disassembly can lead to damage to the case and even the phone itself. First of all, remove the battery compartment cover, take out the battery and SIM card.

Then, using a special tool or a flat-head screwdriver, release two latches, first in the bottom and then in the middle part of the phone body, and remove the front cover. Finally, use a special screwdriver to unscrew the six screws securing the printed circuit board, remove it and disconnect the display connector. This completes the disassembly.

Now you need to force your phone to automatically answer an incoming call. To automatically close the call key (call or answer a call) when there is an incoming call, you can use the voltage supplied at that moment to the dynamic sound head or to the vibration alert (in the latter case, of course, you need to set the “Vibration alert” mode in the phone).

In both cases, either a transistor or an optocoupler can be used as an electronic key. For example, we use a voltage with an amplitude of E = 4 V supplied to the vibration alert, and as a key, a PC817 optocoupler (U1 in the figure below).


Radio microphone

It is produced in a plastic DIP package with four pins. Such optocouplers are used, for example, in power supplies for computers and televisions.

The main parameters of this optocoupler: typical value of the input voltage U (forward voltage drop across the emitting diode at a forward current of 20 mA) - 1.2 V, maximum permissible input current (I) - 50 mA (per pulse - up to 1 A), maximum permissible output current (collector current of the optocoupler transistor) - 50 mA, housing dimensions 6.5 × 4.6 × 3.5 mm. Analogues of RS817 are K1010, N11A817 and LT\/817. It is also possible to use small-sized domestic optocouplers. To reduce the input current, use a current-limiting resistor R1, the resistance of which is calculated using the formula R1 = (E - U)/I.

For example, with a minimum input current of the optocoupler I = 3 mA, the resistance of the resistor R1 = (4-1.2)/3-10 3 = 933 Ohms (since there is no such rating, we select the nearest standard 910 Ohms). You can place the optocoupler in the place where the vibration alert was located. Pins 1 and 2 of the optocoupler are connected to the released contacts of the vibration alert through resistor R1 (MLT, C2-33 with a power dissipation of 0.125 or 0.25 W), observing the polarity.

And its pins 3 and 4 are connected by two thin flexible wires to the contacts of the call key. Secure the optocoupler and connecting wires with Moment glue or varnish, for example, NTs-218.


To ensure secrecy and save energy on your phone, you need to get rid of sound and light signals. The former can be disabled by appropriately setting the phone or removing the dynamic head from it (to do this, simply bend the tabs holding it). As for the LEDs and the display, it is advisable to switch their power circuits. Then, when the power is turned on, it will be possible to monitor the overall performance of the phone, network availability, check the balance and battery charge level, and when it is turned off, the phone’s secrecy and energy saving will be ensured.

The backlight LEDs can be disabled by breaking their power supply, for example, near pin 6 or 7 of the display connector or near the keyboard backlight LED pins at the bottom of the board. However, it is much easier to set the “Backlight Time” mode to “Off” in the display settings menu. Without the display backlight, the image becomes barely visible, but if necessary, you can remove it by turning off the display power. The latter uses miniature contacts, but you can still solder to them. The most convenient way to do this is to cut the printed conductor going to pin 10 of the display connector (Figures 4 and 5).

When soldering, care must be taken not to overheat areas of the printed circuit board and not to short-circuit adjacent conductors with solder.

To switch the display power circuit, you can use a miniature mechanical switch or reed switch. Using a reed switch is preferable because, firstly, the appearance of the phone does not change, and secondly, the secrecy of the device increases, since to turn on the display it is necessary to bring a magnet to a place on the phone body known only to the owner. In this case, the miniature domestic closing reed switch MKA-07101 is convenient. It can be placed next to the optocoupler, and if the dynamic head is removed from the phone, then near the contacts for connecting it (Figure 2). This completes the alteration.

Assemble the radio microphone in the reverse order. When using the described modification option, the appearance of the phone remains unchanged. In standby mode, it does not respond to key presses and appears to be faulty.

In mobile phones, as a rule, they use low-sensitivity microphones that perceive sounds at a distance of no more than 1...2 m. If necessary, you can replace the microphone with a more sensitive one (they are used, for example, in radio tape recorders) or use an additional microphone amplifier.

Installation of a radio bug

To assemble the circuit, you don’t have to design the board yourself. Just take a small piece of double-sided foil PCB 2x3 centimeters. On one side of the PCB, use a cutter to cut the foil into a couple of pieces (as many as needed to install the parts). Everything then needs to be carefully tinned. As you can see, this is not so difficult if you already have some experience in creating electronic homemade products.


On the second side, cut into two parts - larger/smaller. Most of it needs to be made in size so that the battery fits. You will get a positive contact, and for a negative contact, take a bent piece of stripped copper wire or a small rectangular piece of a spring (you can take it from a watch). Make a small cutout on the board for the microphone - this will reduce the size of the entire structure.


Now solder all the parts according to the diagram. We solder the negative contact for the battery on the other side, do not forget about the connecting wires for power. Also solder the microphone in the correct polarity.

Setting up a radio bug

So, is the assembly complete? Now the most interesting part: insert a battery into the bug, take any FM receiver, and try to catch your voice in the speakers. If it doesn’t work the first time, try slightly moving the turns of coil L1 apart, then try again. When the signal is caught, you will be able to achieve the desired frequency without any problems: when the turns are shifted, the frequency of the transmitter decreases, when moved apart, it increases.
