How to connect cable TV via the Internet. Connecting smart TVs to a computer network. Emergence of "smart" TV technology

Many TV owners would like to access the Internet from their devices without using a PC. Knowing how to connect a TV to the Internet, a person may not spend money on buying a computer or laptop. This can be done using a headset and special equipment.

What TVs can be connected to the Internet

You can connect the Internet to a TV that has the “Smart TV” function. With this technology, the user can change the device settings online. With the Smart TV option, the TV is connected to the Internet via a local network or via a wireless Wi-Fi connection.

You can go online from a regular TV without “Smart TV”. Before connecting the Internet on the TV, you should prepare a set-top box to which you need to connect an HDMI cable. This equipment allows you to access the Internet from a TV without built-in Wi-Fi.

What is required to connect

Before connecting, make sure you have the necessary equipment:

  • router and configured Internet access point;
  • LAN cable for direct connection.

The owner of the television device must first study the technical instructions for the TV and find out their IP address for further settings. It is recommended to get information about the type of connection provided by the Internet Service Provider. There is a static and dynamic IP address or PPPoE, which also needs to be considered.

Connection methods

There are the following ways to connect the TV to the Internet:

  • direct cable connection for models with built-in LAN connector;
  • using a Wi-Fi router, a special set-top box or a PLC adapter;
  • enabling WPS;
  • signal transmission through a computer or laptop;
  • “Smart TV” setting.

Knowing how to access the Internet from a TV using this equipment, you can take full advantage of such a connection.

Direct cable connection

There are several ways to connect. If the device has a LAN input, you can connect the TV to the Internet via a cable by connecting it directly to this port. If you have a dynamic IP address, a network cable connection will be created without any further action on the part of the user. The TV will immediately receive an IP address that opens access to the Internet.

If the provider provides a static IP, the subscriber will have to set the necessary parameters in the settings manually. In the TV menu, find the “Network / Network connection” item and go to the “Set up connection” tab. Using the remote control, select the “Manual Setup” item and press the “Wired” button. Here you should enter the IP address and DNS, confirm the changes made. After that, the user can independently build a route map.

Through a router

The router allows you to connect several devices to the Internet: computer, laptop, TV. Through the port of the router, you can connect to the TV using a cable or via WiFi. In the first case, one end of the cable is connected to the built-in TV port, and the other to the input located on the back of the router and marked yellow. If everything is done correctly, data from the router will be transmitted to the TV, on the panel of which the port indicator light will light up. Finally, you need to select the type of IP used and manually enter the necessary data.

Install wireless connection Wi-Fi is available on a TV device equipped with a built-in Wi-Fi module. To activate it, follow these steps:

  • check the functionality of the connected router;
  • open the device menu and in the settings go to the “Network connection” item, if necessary, specifying the type of connection - wireless;
  • in the list that appears, select an available wireless point of the home network;
  • enter the password and wait for the connection.

If you do not have a Wi-Fi adapter, you can connect to the Internet using WPS -- Wi-Fi Protected Setup. To do this, you need to know the login and password set on the router. There is a WPS button on the back of the router, you must press and hold it for a few seconds, then activate the WPS function on the TV, if necessary, enter a special code.

Via PC or laptop

Users can connect an old TV or any modern TV model to their computer or laptop. The device will work in 2 modes:

  1. Image Repeat: The TV acts as a display. You can open a browser and watch movies, but the device can only be controlled through a computer. HDMI or VGA is used to establish a connection.
  2. Reading data from a computer. You can access computer data using an established local network. The user will be able to watch movies and listen to music stored on the PC's hard drive without an Internet connection.

Via TV box

You need to understand what you need to connect. Standard set-top boxes from different manufacturers have TV viewing, browser, and home theater functions. They are analogous to "Smart TV". The set-top box connects to the router using a LAN cable or Wi-Fi, and to the TV via HDMI. The IP address settings are set in the set-top box menu.

An Android set-top box is an analogue of a mobile phone or tablet, the interface of which opens on a large screen. Downloaded from Play Market applications can be used from TV. On TV, access to work with e-mail and instant messengers, viewing online channels via the Internet is opened. To do this, you need to study the instructions for searching and configuring channels.

Such a set-top box allows you to connect the Internet to an old TV that does not have the Smart TV function or Wi-Fi receivers. In fact, this is such a minicomputer.

PLC adapter and wireless connection

If you have a standard modem, you can connect to the network using an Ethernet cable. A PLC adapter (powerline) can replace such a cable - a device that transmits a signal through the wires of a home electrical network. Such equipment is provided by Beeline and Rostelecom providers.

The appearance of the adapter is somewhat reminiscent of an ordinary power supply, but only without wires. The set consists of a receiver and a transmitter. We connect the transmitter to the router using an Ethernet cable, then press the button on both Pair adapters and after pairing, the Internet can be taken from the receiver using the same Ethernet cable through the STB set-top box.

Modern adapters provide high data transfer rates - up to 1 GB per second, but this is the declared, real transfer rate is still lower, but usually higher than when connected via Wi-Fi. PLC adapters are plugged into a power outlet.

Smart TV settings

Samsung and LG TVs

TVs of both brands are configured in the same way. To connect Smart TV to the Internet, you need:

  1. Go to the main menu.
  2. Log in to your personal user account by entering your username and password
  3. To create a new account, you must register with your email address.

You can download applications in your personal account. There is also access to the Internet. In case of signal loss, the IP address must be entered manually.

Sony TVs

Owners of Japanese Sony TVs should adhere to the following scheme of actions:

  • go to the device menu and select the “Home” item;
  • click on the button with the name “Settings”;
  • go to the "Network" tab, and then click "Update Internet Content";
  • in the "My Applications" window, select the appropriate icon to launch.

Otherwise, the “Smart TV” function is the same as the corresponding function found on other devices. You can manage it without changing the firmware of the device.

Most modern TVs are equipped with Smart TV technology. Thanks to it, you can connect to the Internet through the TV interface and watch high-quality movies online. And even this is not the end, because having a camera and a microphone, you can communicate through the Skype application. But for everything to work out, it is important to correctly connect and configure Smart TV.

Smart TV connection

To use all the features of Smart TV technology, your TV must be connected to the Internet. This can be done in 2 ways:

  • wireless connection using a Wi-Fi network;
  • connecting the TV and the router using an Internet cable.

The most correct thing is to decide on the connection method even before purchasing a TV. However, it is highly recommended to purchase devices that interact with the Internet via Wi-Fi. This method of connecting to the network is much faster than an Internet cable, it is much easier to connect the circuit, you can avoid unnecessary expenses and laying a cable around the apartment.

In any case, connecting Smart TV technology to the Internet is easy:

  1. Cable connection.

This is the most simplest way though not very practical. An Internet cable is taken and directly connected between the TV, modem and Ethernet port. The connection will be recognized instantly, after which you can start using all the amenities of the Smart TV system on the TV: watch videos, download them, use Skype (if you have peripheral equipment).

Flaws:

  • moving devices is difficult and depends entirely on the location of the router and the length of the cable;
  • the slightest damage to the wire can cause some instability in the network or completely ruin the connection to the Internet;
  • over time, the cable sheath may crack, exposing the inside of the cable (increasing the likelihood of electric shock);
  • in some cases, it is not possible to lay an additional cable beautifully (under the plinth or floor), as a result, it will lie sloppy right on the floor.

Advantages:

  • the most simple circuit connections that you can think of (any person can handle it, even a full-fledged beginner);
  • there is no need to understand the settings and somehow additionally configure the TV to receive a signal;
  • 99% of all faults are in the cable - after replacing it, the Internet reappears;
  • An Internet cable is purchased at a low price, and the entire connection procedure lasts no more than 1 minute.

One end of the LAN cable must be connected to the Ethernet socket on the Smart TV, and the other end to an external Internet modem. The modem itself is also connected to the Ethernet port in the wall (if not already done). Then there will be a short recognition of the new connection by the device, and access to the Internet will appear. This completes the connection.

  1. Wireless connection.

To connect Smart TV via Wi-Fi, you need to have a built-in Wi-Fi module in your TV. It is he who will "catch" the Internet from the router. If this is not available, you should purchase a special adapter (a small device that connects to a TV / computer), which will act as a connecting link. This adapter is connected to the USB port on the TV.

First you need to make sure that the Wi-Fi router is working properly and is fully connected to the Internet. Further, after installing the adapter (not required with the built-in module), select the appropriate section in the TV options and start the process of searching for available Wi-Fi connections.

It is important to pay attention to the name of the available Internet network. If it turns out to be a neighbor's router, it can be turned off at any time. Therefore, you should be responsible for the choice of available networks in order to have a constant and guaranteed connection to the Internet.

If you have a security code/password, you will need to enter it during the connection process. As soon as the connection between the TV and the Wi-Fi router is set up, the user will have full access to Internet resources and applications.

Also, complete with the purchased TV, there is always a user manual that has comprehensive information about the rules for connecting, setting up and using Smart TV technology.

How to connect Smart TV to the Internet via a LAN cable and via Wi-Fi, see the following video:

  1. Connection via computer.

The use of Smart TV technology can be achieved through a computer. You can connect TV in 2 ways:

  • through the mentioned Wi-Fi.

However, an HDMI connection will not be able to access the Internet. Thus, it will only be possible to watch movies on the computer using the TV as a monitor.

But when you connect to a computer through the Wi-Fi setting, the Internet will become available, as if you connect to a regular router (in fact, this is the same thing).

After all the procedures carried out, it remains only to finally configure Smart TV.

Features of setting up LG TVs

Different TVs have different settings, so for the full operation of Smart TV, it is important to set up the device for a proper connection to the Internet.

For TV models from the manufacturer LG, it is often required to register in the Smart TV system. Without this, it will be impossible to install and use applications (as well as the rest of the TV functionality).

First you need to go to the main menu of the TV. Then in the upper right corner of the menu there will be a button for logging into your account. There it will be necessary to enter a username and password from it, but since the account does not yet exist, it must be created. To do this, you need the "Create an account / Register" button.

In the form that opens, you should come up with and enter a password, login, and also add an email address:

In any of the cases, during the registration process, you will need a smartphone or computer to go to your email and confirm the profile registration process on the network.

Connection features in Sony Bravia

Setting up Smart TV technology on Sony Bravia TVs is significantly different:

1. First of all, on the remote control, press the "Home" button:

This will take the user to the main menu of the TV.

2. Then, in the window that opens, select the icon with the image of a suitcase, after which the "Settings" menu will appear:

3. In the drop-down list, select the "Network" item:

4. As a result, a few more items will appear, from which you should select "Update Internet Content":

After these steps, the Internet will conditionally reboot, and the TV will tune in to the desired network. This completes the Smart TV setup.

Setting up Samsung TVs

The TV comes with a user manual that explains the connection procedure in detail, but not the detailed Smart TV settings. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Samsung is fully confident that there will be no problems during the connection:

1. On the remote control, enter the Smart Hub menu:

2. To check the operation of Smart TV, just launch any of the available applications:

If it starts, then the technology is working successfully, and you can start enjoying all the benefits of the service.

What should I do if I can't connect to the Internet?

But what to do when various errors occur, it is difficult to say. Each malfunction has its own solutions, so it is impossible to determine the actions that will surely help.

However, you can try to fix the error in the most common way. Dive into the Smart TV settings and change them if necessary:

1. The item "Menu" is selected, then "Network" and "Network Settings":

2. A message will also appear there, prompting you to automatically try to set up the connection.

You should not immediately put an end to this idea, because it is quite possible that the TV will be able to solve the malfunction that has arisen on its own. Therefore, in the window, click on "Start" to begin the automatic configuration process.

If the Internet network can be configured, a corresponding message will appear. If not, then an error message will pop up.

3. If it is impossible to establish a connection in this way, you need to go to the "Network Status" menu. It's located just below "Network Settings":

4. In a new window, you need to go to the "IP Settings" item, and then select the automatic receipt of an IP address:

5. If this does not help, then you will have to enter all the data yourself:

You can find out the IP address, subnet mask, etc. by contacting your Internet Service Provider via a phone call. Also, if you have a computer and use the same Internet, you can go to the local connection menu and select "Details". The window that appears will show all the data about the Internet network, but only the underlined ones will be of interest for Smart TV:

They should be entered in the TV menu in the sections of the same name.

After the steps taken, an Internet connection should be established, and you can start using Smart TV on a Samsung TV.

Identical steps for setting up the network can be carried out on any other models, since the difference lies only in the location of the menu and the names of the sections. But no need to worry, because they will be intuitive: "Network Setup" and "Network Settings" are the same thing.

To check Smart TV, you can run any application or otherwise try to use TV features that require the Internet. If it worked out, then everything is in order, and if not, you need to adjust. Everything is very simple, the main thing is to understand the essence of the device and carefully read the instructions for the user.

In contact with

Hello dear friends! Time flies very quickly, and new models of TVs are constantly appearing on the shelves of equipment stores. And if you have recently purchased an LCD TV, then you have probably heard that Wi-Fi can be connected to it. Indeed, there is such a possibility. In general, it is worth admitting that the idea of writing today's article was suggested to me by my neighbor, who actually turned to me with a request to help connect his TV to the global Internet, since he is completely far from such things.

In general, we can say that we successfully connected the TV with it, though there was one nuance due to which some difficulties arose during the connections, but in general the procedure is not so complicated as it seems at first glance. Therefore, in this article I will tell you in detail how to connect a TV to the Internet via a wifi router, you will also learn how this process goes in general and what you need to connect it. We will also consider the types of Internet connections for modern TVs. You definitely need to know this so that you have in mind in advance whether it is possible to connect the TV to the global web or not, for example, when buying it.

From the title of today's article, it is clear that a router must be installed in your house or apartment. I already talked about the router in my previous articles, you can look at these articles:

or read this post

If this step is not completed, then you can try to connect the cable to the TV, but this is a topic for another article.

I will show the analysis of the procedure for connecting the Internet to a TV through a wifi router using LG as an example. Be sure that the process is identical for other popular brands - Samsung, Toshiba, Phillips, Sony, etc.

How to connect the TV to the Internet through a wifi router?

So, all modern TVs can be divided into several categories:

1. Models with built-in Wi-Fi. This the best way, since the module is already in the design, that is, you do not need to install optional equipment. On such a TV, connecting to the Internet takes no more than 10 minutes.

2. TV with Wi-Fi adapter connection support. Initially, such TVs cannot connect to a router, but you can buy a separate adapter for them. After that, you will be able to use the wireless connection. Keep in mind that different adapters are available for each model. That is why it is important to carefully study the instructions. Adapters look like this:

TVs without Wi-Fi, but with a wall socket. Older models do not support an external adapter, and there is no built-in module in such TVs. You may find a connector for connecting a cable. Then you can implement the following scheme: connect the TV to a second router that operates in client mode. There is also an alternative option, which involves connecting a cable to a LAN adapter, which can receive Internet via Wi-Fi and distribute it via cable.

I won’t talk about models without a LAN connector and Wi-Fi, although there are some craftsmen who connect the Internet to a TV with an HDMI connector. In this manual, we will consider the option with a TV, where a Wi-Fi module is initially present. I repeat once again that the material will be useful for those who already have a USB adapter.

Important! If you have not yet chosen the right TV for yourself, then when buying, check that the TV has a Smart TV function. With it, using the Internet will be even more convenient, and the built-in Wi-Fi module is definitely taken into account there.

What do you need to connect your TV to the Internet?

We just have to get ready. The main component is a TV with a built-in Wi-Fi adapter or an external USB receiver. If you have the second option, then connect the adapter to the TV in advance. Next, you need to check if the router is working. The device model in this case is not important - it must be working.

If you don’t have a router, then perhaps Wi-Fi networks without a password are openly available. Sometimes it is impossible to connect to them due to the fact that filtering by MAC address is set. That is why it is recommended that you have your own router and access to its settings. Then, if necessary, you can make changes. Everything is ready, then we proceed to the connection process!

How to connect a TV to the Internet through a wifi router: step by step instructions!

When we turn on the TV for the first time, it itself offers us to connect to the Internet. Moreover, the system provides a choice - to do it via cable or via Wi-Fi. Most likely, you ignored this item at the first start, so I will show you how to connect the Internet through the settings. Also, you might not have seen this menu, which means that the TV was turned on without you or even in the store.

We start the TV and open the settings - press the "Settings" button on the remote control.

In the menu that opens, you need to find the "Network" tab, then go to the "Network connection" section. If you have an English version of the menu, then follow the example from the screenshots:

After that, the system will show us a small instruction, I recommend that you read it. After that, click on the "Set up connection" button.

The TV will automatically start searching for available networks and give you the result. In my case, there are two connections available. If you need to enter data for the connection yourself, then select "Manual setup". Here you may have a question, and in what cases such a function may be needed? You need to connect using WPS technology, drive in a static IP address, or connect with a hidden SSID.

Using the virtual keyboard, specify the password, if present. Confirm the entry with the "OK" button. If the password was entered correctly. Then you will see a message stating that you have successfully connected to the Internet. Click "Finish" and move on. Perhaps the system will prompt you to enter DNS and IP, I recommend leaving all indicators on "Automatic" and clicking "Finish". As the reviews of owners of TVs of other brands show, sometimes the system issues a network card - it makes no sense to describe this process, since it does not affect the operation of the wireless connection in any way.

Great, now all the functions of Smart TV are available to you. The screenshot below shows the icon responsible for turning on Smart TV. Also at the top of the screen you can find out if your computer is connected to the wireless Internet.

Possible problems when trying to connect the TV to the Internet through a wifi router

Sometimes when trying to connect to the wireless Internet, errors pop up. They can be corrected as follows:

Disconnect the TV from the network and reconnect it. This is the easiest way, but sometimes it helps to solve difficult problems.

Did not work out? Then you should try resetting Smart Hub settings. We go into this section and go to the "Tools". You will find such a button on the remote control. Next, we need to go to "Settings" and click on the "Reset" button. The TV may ask you to enter the PIN code "0000". Next, you will need to agree to the terms, after which the reinstallation will begin.

If this does not help, then you should try updating all the TV software. You will find this feature in "Support". The system will prompt you to update over the network, but in some cases this cannot be done, because you cannot connect to the Internet. In this case, you need to download the software on the Internet on a computer, and then transfer it to the TV using a USB flash drive. I also suggest you watch the following video:

Well, dear friends, that's actually all that I wanted to tell you today in this article. Concluding today's article - how to connect a TV to the Internet via a wifi router, it will be necessary to note that the process is quite quick and simple. If you have a TV from another manufacturer at home, then I think that you will quickly get used to it with the help of my instructions. Do not forget to write questions in the comments if you encounter any difficulty when setting up a wireless Internet connection. Together we will look for possible problems connecting the TV to the Internet.

I will also add that I checked the operation of Smart TV on the TP-Link TL-WR841N router. In addition to the TV, 5 more devices were connected to the router. The real speed was about 2 Mb / s. This indicator was enough for me to fully use the functions of Smart TV. As an example, I can say that I watched YouTube videos in HD format, and there were no noticeable slowdowns in speed.

Modern electronics manufacturers strive to make any product "smart", which is confirmed, for example, by Smart-TV technology. After learning from this article how to connect the Internet to an LG TV (webOS), you can not only watch regular TV broadcasts, but also launch your favorite movies and series online directly from the TV screen or surf the web using the remote control. Including go to Vkontakte, Facebook and other popular resources.

Let's figure it out.

There are two options for connecting LG SmartTV to the World Wide Web: wireless - WiFi and cable - LAN (Ethernet). Each of the methods has advantages and disadvantages, so the choice of the type of bundle depends on the needs of the user. It is worth noting that a cable connection is only suitable for those who plan to install smart television at the stage of repair work in the room and are ready to delve into additional parameters. Today, Wi-Fi technology is the most popular.

Via network cable

This method is far from the most convenient, as it requires installation work in the room. If you already have a network cable for a WiFi router from a provider in your apartment, then you will also have to carry out a second one: the flow of information over one Ethernet channel can only be directed to one device.

Another disadvantage of this method is that modern LG TVs do not support all network standards of domestic providers (among those that are incompatible, for example, PPPoE and L2T) - the LV technique simply will not see the wire connected to the Ethernet port that goes directly from the Internet provider.

For these purposes, a router is required, and it is already authorized to the PPPoE server on it. You should not be afraid, 99.99% that everything will work the first time.

If a cable connection is the only possible solution, then you should be prepared to manually set the connection parameters (if DHCP is not running on the router). You will need to manually enter data such as the IP address and DNS servers into the device's memory. You may also need to tell your provider the MAC address of the TV device: some providers use this code to identify the device in the system.

Please note that if there is only one LAN cable at home and it is inserted into the LG TV, then you will have to distribute WiFi to other gadgets from Smart-TV. You can find out the compatibility of the device with local standards from the contract or by calling the provider (Dom.Ru, Rostelecom, MTS and others).

Via WiFi

Connecting your TV wirelessly to the Internet via a WiFi router will not only take less time, but is also more convenient in terms of everyday use. In some cases, it is convenient to use WPS technology to quickly synchronize devices, more details in the section below.

The user does not need to pull special wires around the apartment (called twisted pair) or buy additional accessories. All you need is a router connected to the network.

The exception to the rule is those models of LG TVs that do not have a built-in Wi-Fi module, but at the same time support Smart-TV technology: you will have to purchase an external network module (for example, LJI AN-WF100). This accessory is inserted into a USB port, pcmcia card (for older models) or C1 connector, and it is synchronized with the device automatically - no one should have any difficulties. The cost of such a module is almost 4000 rubles. You should not try to save money and buy a cheap analogue, since LG TVs are only compatible with adapters from this manufacturer.

Another option for the wireless method is the Ad-Hoc network, which does not require a WiFi modem to set up. In this case, the TV is connected directly to the computer (local DLNA server) and does not have Internet access, but the user gets the opportunity to broadcast any media files stored in the laptop//system unit memory on a large TV screen.

Setting

When first launched, the new LV TV asks the owner for permission to automatically set up the connection. Practice shows that this notification is often ignored by the user due to the unwillingness to waste time on an "unnecessary" function and the desire to quickly start the list of TV channels. If auto-tuning was not immediately performed, then the procedure for further connecting the TV to the global network will consist of steps such as:

  1. We launch the device and go to the "Settings" using the "Settings" button located on the remote control.
  2. Go to the "Network" section (the icon in the form globe) and subsection "Network connection".
  3. Choose the source of access - wireless technology WiFi or LAN-cable.
  4. We start auto-tuning, in the mode of which you only need to enter the password from the WiFi router or press the WPS button on the router. With a cable connection, you must enter all the data yourself.
  5. Confirm saving the settings.

Attention! The location of buttons, menus, as well as the interface as a whole, is very different from model to model. We recommend that you look into the standard instructions, in order to avoid force majeure.

After completing the algorithm described above, LG Smart-TV will be connected to the global network and you can enjoy watching online content. If you need to set additional connection parameters (for example, register a static IP address or a hidden SSID), the automatic task of the parameters is not your way. For more details and details, see the Video at the end of the article.

Attention! Although manual configuration provides the TV owner with advanced options, this method is recommended only for advanced users who need additional protection of personal information and who have at least minimal knowledge in the IT field.

Possible problems

If you have already connected the Internet to SmartTV, but the connection of the device to the network was suddenly interrupted for one reason or another, do not panic and immediately rush to the TV masters for help, such a problem can be fixed on your own.

The first thing to do is to understand at what stage of the wireless link binding the failure occurred. To do this, go to "Settings", then - to "Network Status". You will see a chain of icons of all devices involved in the Internet connection. The presence of a red checkmark next to one of the icons will indicate a "broken" part of the channel. The connection will be restored in one of the following ways:

  • if such a symbol appeared opposite the TV itself - the point is the wrong password for accessing the router - just update the password in the corresponding webOS window;
  • when a checkmark appears in front of the gateway, you will need to reboot the router;
  • DNS malfunction is most likely related to an error in the MAC address - you will have to contact the provider with a request to update the code in the database.

Problems can occur due to a malfunction in the webOS operating system. To update software necessary:

  • download the firmware file to the computer;
  • download the update to a flash drive (it must be formatted in FAT32);
  • insert a USB flash drive into the USB port of the TV;
  • go to "Software Update" and start automatic mode;
  • agree to install the new firmware.

The system itself will find the required file on the removable disk and install it. After a successful update, repeat the connection setup according to the algorithm described in the previous section of the article.

Conclusion

So, there are two ways to connect the Internet to an LG smart TV: using a LAN cable or via WiFi wireless technology. Setting up the webOS television OS will be almost the same for both the first and second methods, and any user can overcome possible connection problems. If you have any other questions, we recommend watching the video instruction.

FromLAN-connector up toSmart TV

A little over twenty years ago, only a more powerful antenna could be connected to a TV. After that, a LAN port appeared on the case for organizing a cable network.

Even later - Wi-Fi, first as a separate device (adapter), and then as a built-in module. Gradually, TVs "overgrown" with multimedia capabilities: players, instant messengers, clients for YouTube. And today, Smart TV is absolutely calmly perceived, which turned the TV into a computer entertainment center. Smart TV combines hardware components (the same Wi-Fi module) and a software environment, the latter being based on Linux or Android with all the ensuing consequences in the form of installing applications from Google Play.

How to take full advantage of these benefits, we will describe in detail below. We hope our tips will help you connect your TV to the Internet the first time.

What you need to connect your TV to the Internet

You have to make the TV part of the local network - which means that you will need data to enter it. First, it is the name that is used for identification. Two options are possible here: either you named the network when you first connected to the Internet, or you use the standard one that was automatically generated. Usually the latter contains the name of the router or the name of the provider, although other options are possible. Secondly, this is a password for accessing the network - it can be invented by you, the provider, or simply used by default (turn the router over and see the cherished numbers). If you happen to be unsure of one or both of the settings, contact your ISP.

From the equipment you will need a router, it is also a router. Most likely, it is there, configured and you actively use the Internet, which it distributes on different devices: PC, laptops, tablets, smartphones and other gadgets. Now a TV will be added to them. The router in this case will be an intermediary between it and the provider's network. It's good that it does not need complex settings - it is enough that the DHCP server is activated in the section with LAN network parameters.

Connecting the TV to the Internet via cable

To make connections, stock up on a network patch cord. It is freely sold in stores selling computer accessories, as well as in service shops. This cable will connect the router and the TV. In both cases, LAN ports are used, so make sure that at least such a free port is on the router. Choose the length of the cable in order to hide it from prying eyes - a room entangled with wires does not look very neat. Alternatively, you can use a pair of PowerLine adapters that will allow you to organize a local network using existing wiring. True, for this, it is desirable to have one free socket next to the adapter and the TV.

When the physical connection is established, you can proceed to the software configuration. The procedure for different TV manufacturers varies slightly, but in general everything looks about the same.

  1. Turn on the TV and go to the section with global settings. There is usually a Settings button on the remote for this purpose;
  2. Go to the section called "Network" and open the item "Network settings".
  3. Click the "Start" (or "Start") button to launch the connection wizard.
  4. Select "Cable" ("Cable connection") from the proposed list and confirm your choice. When the connection is established, a corresponding message will appear on the screen.
  5. Test the Internet by opening the built-in browser or the YouTube client.

Connecting the TV to the Internet via a wireless network (Wifi)

Do not want to overload the interior with extra wires - your right. In this case, we propose to organize a connection via a radio channel. Most likely, a router working at home can distribute the Internet over a Wi-Fi network - then make sure that the appropriate technology is supported by the TV too.

If there is no built-in module, this is not a reason to be upset: there are external adapters on sale. They are inexpensive - an average of 600-1000 rubles - and are produced by well-known manufacturers such as TP-Link, Asus, Tenda and others.

To set up a wireless connection, follow steps 1 to 3 above. Next, select "Wireless" in the proposed list and confirm the choice. If the Wi-Fi network is accessible with a password (we recommend setting one if it is not), enter it and complete the connection. The system will ask you to enter IP and DNS - ignore, leaving the default options. Then test the new connection using the built-in browser or other service that requires the Internet.

If you have a slow Internet connection and a lot of "consumers", 4K and Full HD video will play on your TV with a delay. To prevent this from happening, pause playback for a few minutes or select a lower resolution (720p or 360p).

TV set-top box - an alternative for older TV models

The Smart TV set-top box is the only option to “upgrade” an old TV that does not have its own Wi-Fi module. As a software basis, such set-top boxes use the Android OS, which is well known to owners of smartphones and tablets. The big advantage of this solution is that this operating system allows you to install any application from Google Play. However, the set-top box also has its own set of services, including channels (up to several hundred!), media players, online cinemas, instant messengers, access to IPTV and much more. For example, in the set-top box Interactive TV 2.0 + Wi-Fi from OnLime, more than 2000 films and series, 120 channels and many other interesting features are available. .

An Android set-top box connects to a TV in one of three ways: an HDMI cable, an AV cable (RCA tulips), or an HDMI converter adapter. Once the wired connection is established, change the source on the TV using the Input or Source buttons on the remote control. By the way, through an HDMI cable you will get the best picture quality, which cannot be said about the AV cable that is used to connect older TVs.

If everything went well, the TV will “see” the prefix and the only thing left is to set up an Internet connection. As usual, two methods are available: via an Ethernet cable that will network the set-top box and router, or via Wi-Fi. In the first case, a physical connection is enough, in the second, the system will require you to enter a password for accessing the wireless network. After that, proceed to personalize the device - set the language, current time and date, install applications from Google Play.

Other ways to connect your TV to the Internet

Many modern routers support WPS technology. Noticed this designation on your device? Congratulations - it means that the setup will take only a couple of minutes. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a technology that makes it easy to connect devices to a wireless network. This is convenient, because now you do not need to enter a password for the network and understand the settings section.

Important! In some routers, the same button is responsible for activating WPS and the RESET function. Holding it for 5 seconds or more will reset the settings to factory settings!

To enable the WPS function, hold down the corresponding button for 1-2 seconds. If the operation is successful, an additional indicator will flash on the router. After that, activate the WPS mode on the second device - the TV. And then there are options.

First. The TV does not have a Wi-Fi module and you are using an appropriate adapter. If it also has a WPS button, just press it and the TV will connect to your home network in a few seconds.

Second. If the Wi-Fi module is built into the TV, select the WPS item in the network settings wizard.

If the router does not have a WPS button, there is a high probability that the technology is still supported by the device. In this case, to activate it, perform a small wireless network setup in the router itself. To do this, you will need a PIN code from the label of the router, glued on the bottom. You can learn more about activating WPS in the instructions for the router - the settings menu interface differs from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Smart TVs offer a virtual keyboard for entering text, but using it is not very convenient. Remote control is familiar, but limited in scope. We offer two alternative options that will make browsing the Internet from your TV more enjoyable.

Smartphone applications. They are widely represented in the Google Play and App Store content stores. They are easy to find in the relevant sections or by such keywords: Smart TV, Remote, Control. Brands often appear in the names well-known manufacturers TVs - Samsung and LG. The app is handy because it allows you to easily customize the screen content, switch between multiple content sources, and even simply navigate using the cursor - just like you use the touchpad on a laptop.

Accessories with a gyroscope. It can be both remotes with extended functionality, and wireless mice in tandem with a keyboard. Consoles and mice with gyroscopes are usually called air guns and air mice, respectively. In them, the cursor is controlled by moving the device in space. Light movements up, down and to the sides are enough - the cursor will accurately repeat the movements of the user's hand.

If you haven't tried connecting your TV to the Internet yet, it's time to start - especially since in most cases everything you need is at hand.
