Crocheted from old things. How to turn do-it-yourself deposits from old T-shirts into bright rugs

The second life of old t-shirts can be given in many ways. The bottom line is that the t-shirt is cut into thin strips. These stripes are twisted and then crocheted from them. Most often knit decorative rugs, rugs to the front door or balcony, etc..

Even if you do not know how to crochet anything but crochet, this method is right for you.

We cut the “threads” of t-shirts

It is very important to cut t-shirts with a minimum of labor. When you start doing this, you will understand why. There can be many t-shirts. If you just cut in a spiral, starting from the bottom, it will take a lot of time.

To shorten the process of preparing "yarn", we offer a mini-instruction. All actions are shown on the example of a children's t-shirt. But the main thing is the principle.

All photos were taken by a layman :)

1. Cut off the bottom edge and the top of the t-shirt above the armpits. There remains a direct circular web. Sometimes it is solid, sometimes with one or two side seams - it does not matter.

2. Fold the canvas along, leaving the “lower” part to protrude by about 2-2.5 cm.

3. We take sharp scissors. We start to cut (parallel to the bottom) strips with a width of about 1.5 cm. You can make strips even if you want the “yarn” to be less coarse. Cut to the protruding part, leaving it not cut.

4. We take the uncut part, straighten it in front of us and cut it obliquely, connecting the adjacent “incisions”. It’s better to see it schematically in the photo.

As a result, a small ball of “thread” came out of our T-shirt.

From such a glomerulus crochet number 7  you can knit a mini mat that will serve as a stand for a mug on the desktop:

When T-shirts are larger and larger, the starting material for knitting will also be larger.

Examples of rugs from old t-shirts

Here are some pictures of crocheted rugs from old T-shirts.

When there is time and inspiration available, I want to make something unusual and bright for the home. Do-it-yourself bath mat from something old and unnecessary, for example, old T-shirts or bags. Surely, such a masterpiece will please you and your household much more than a regular bathroom mat from the store.

What rugs can I buy at the store?

Of course, in retail outlets you can also find an original bath mat, but you are unlikely to find it at a reasonable price if you want to buy a thing on a natural basis. The natural products listed below are not cheap:

  • woolen
  • bamboo;
  • jute mats;
  • palm fiber products;
  • cork models;
  • vine mats.

Mostly, factory bath mats are made on the basis of materials of plant origin. But the artificial ones are made on the basis of:

  • rubber;
  • silicone.

As a rule, artificial products consist of a homogeneous material and differ in color. Far away of course not all buyers are willing to overpay for natural rugs  and prefer to purchase artificial ones. However, you can please yourself with a natural carpet in the bath, making it with your own hands and not spending a dime. And if you want originality, you can add color to the old rubber mat.

How to transform an old artificial rug with your own hands?

If you want to give originality to an old bath carpet made of rubber, then you will need:

  • pebbles from the sea;
  • glue gun;
  • the rug itself.

To make the rug more original, use stones of different shades and sizes. So, everything is ready, the original massage mat on a natural basis is ready. You can try to do foot massage with it.

For this procedure special glue should be usedwhich is resistant to moisture, otherwise the stones will fall off the surface too quickly.

How to make a rug from old t-shirts with your own hands?

If you have long dreamed of a beautiful and original rug in the bathroom and still do not know what to do with old torn t-shirts, you can use them to create a unique designer bag.

For work, prepare the following:

  • several cotton t-shirts;
  • scissors;
  • threads
  • strong fabric for the basis;
  • sewing machine.

Old T-shirts, threads, fabric base - all this can be easily found in almost every apartment, therefore you don’t have to buy anything  for making a rug based on t-shirts.

To weave such an original product, not only T-shirts are suitable for you, but also T-shirts, sweatshirts and other old things from knitwear.

Now let's get to work:

  • we cut out tapes from T-shirts, from which later the carpet will weave: evenly and gently cut the T-shirt into strips of equal size;
  • we begin the weaving process: we weave a long bundle, from which then a whole rug will come out. Take three strips, it is desirable that one of them has one color, and two - the other, and then weave them together. Not too long fold the tape from the t-shirt in half, find the middle and sew the second ribbon to this place, then start the weaving process according to the braid principle;
  • so that there are no extra folds on the ribbons, try not to twist them when weaving;
  • if a ribbon of one color or another comes to an end, you need to connect it as follows: sew to it the same at an angle of 90 degrees. Make a diagonal line along the tape extension. The principle of stitching will be clear to you when cutting corners in a semicircle at small ends, after you sewed the ribbons - it should go along a parallel section of the path, and the cut should be carried out with minimal indentation from the line level;
  • in a similar way weave "braids" until you understand that the material for the mat is already enough. When weaving, you can use special stationery clipsso that the fabric does not become loose. When the tourniquet is already long enough, fold it in the form of a spiral and check whether you will be large enough or you need to continue the weaving process;
  • in the presence of t-shirts of various shades, you can when weaving in one place change the color of two or three ribbons, thereby making the rug multicolored;
  • when you are sure that the ribbons are enough, sew their ends together;
  • fold the rug out of the blue into a tight spiral, straighten it, align it and sew the terminated end part to the previous turn;
  • connect the spiral: choose the wrong side of the product, which will serve as the inside out. Then, starting from the center, move in the direction of the tourniquet and sew each turn with the previous one using strong threads.

Here is our rug made from old T-shirts and T-shirts ready. If desired, you can hide the seams and the inside, as well as do not forget to hem the base of the product  a round piece of dense fabric. Now you can decorate the bathroom with a beautiful and natural do-it-yourself rug.

If you decide to make a multi-colored carpet from t-shirts of different colors, then it is perfect for bathrooms, where children often bathe. In addition, with the right combination of multi-colored stripes, you can perform a simple pattern on your rug.

How to make a carpet of old fabric bags with your own hands?

Of course, multi-colored rugs will look much more interesting than plain ones. Therefore, we bring to your attention another option for creating a unique do-it-yourself rug from unnecessary fabric things, including the same old T-shirts.

For this type of carpet we different old things will be needed  a lot. On their basis, we will manufacture both the bags themselves and their fillers.

Also if you want to make a rug with anti-slip coatingTake a plain rubber base. It is best to buy the simplest rubber rug, which we will subsequently sheathe with fabric.

You can do such a product with your own hands as follows:

  • take pieces of fabric from old T-shirts, shirts, dresses and other fabric products;
  • cut them into squares;
  • cut the second part of things into thin rags, they will serve as filling for the bags;
  • from the squares, form bags and fill them with flaps, then tie each of them with strong threads;
  • make a base from burlap or durable fabric;
  • sew to it one after another bags with filling;
  • thanks to the shades and texture, you can easily lay out one or another pattern from the bags;
  • after you have sewn all the bags, apply glue to the rubber base, and on top - the fabric base, sheathed with bags;
  • bend the edges of the base down and wait for it to dry.

That's all: another unique model of a bath mat can decorate it if you wish.

And these options for creating unique do-it-yourself rugs are far from the only ones. On the Internet and books on needlework you can find a lot of options for their manufacture  based on materials you’ve been intent on throwing away for a long time.

No one dares say that a thing is made of junk. As far as it will have an original look and no purchase, the rug, even the most expensive, is unlikely to be compared with it in terms of style.

Rugs and carpets - that creates comfort in the house from the threshold. And if they are made with their own hands, then the heat from them becomes only more!

Surely many of us know and remember the round rugs knitted by our grandmothers and great-grandmothers.

So why not try weaving such a rug?

To do this, we need old knitted T-shirts or sheets, scissors and a large crochet hook that have become unnecessary. Prepared things must be cut into long ribbons about 2-2.5 cm wide and slightly stretched so that they turn into a kind of yarn. Photo: Yarn preparation

Next, arm ourselves with a crochet hook and knit in a circle.

If you don’t have a hook at hand, you can knit such a rug with your hands! Yes, most likely it will take a little longer, but the result will be no worse.

Photo: Knitting a rug without a hook

The third option for a round rug is to fasten the tapes with thick thread or yarn. In this case, “sew” ribbons of fabric in a spiral.

Want a sleek, bright rug? Weave a very long pigtail from the ribbons as shown in the figure, and then put a tight spiral out of it and use a sewing machine or a thick needle and thread to fix it.

Do you have a hoop? Pull the ribbons on it, and then, starting from the center, pass the ribbons through them, as if you were weaving a basket. At the end of the work, cut the ribbons of the base and fix by tying it in a knot. Photo: Hoop weaving

By the same principle, you can weave a square or rectangular rug. You will need a frame that you can assemble from their wooden battens or polypropylene tubes and corners. Fix longitudinal tapes on them, and then pass transverse ones between them. At the end, cut and fix the base tape, as in the previous version. Photo: Weaving a rectangular rug

These are just a few examples of how to weave or knit home rugs from old T-shirts. Get inspired and do it!

No offense is said - I judge only by myself. For example, I gathered a decent amount of knitted T-shirts, T-shirts and turtlenecks from my children. Have you been wondering how to dispose of them for a long time? It's a pity to translate rags, and rags, by the way, do not need so much.
  And finally, on the eve of the birth of my first granddaughter, I got the idea to make a soft rug out of them. I don’t know if it was light or from the category of disturbing. I'm talking about a thought.
  To make the rug we needed:
  1. Glue gun.
  2. Scissors.
  3. A needle with a thread.
  4. Circle template with a diameter of 12 cm.
  5. Knitwear that has served its purpose.
  6. Non-woven fabric is the thickest 1.6 m * 1.6 m.
  7. Foam rubber.
  8. Sintepon.
  9. Oilcloth 1 m * 1 m.
  10. Cotton fabric 1 m * 1 m.
  11. Lightning 1 m long.

  So, let's begin. From pre-washed items (t-shirts, turtlenecks, etc.), we cut out circles of different colors, outlining the pattern with a marker.

  I spent about 30 children's plain t-shirts and a turtleneck on my rug. By the way, she also disposed of things of her nephews.

Using the simplest “needle forward” seam, we draw a line in a circle, departing from the edge of 0.5 cm. The process is so simple that you can attract older children. Both daughters helped me from time to time.

  We put filler in our billet (synthetic winterizer, foam rubber, etc.), tightening the thread, we get a soft ball.

  About five hundred pieces were needed for my rug with a diameter of 1.6 m (do not be alarmed), so I used a used filler (old sintepon blanket, foam scraps, lost pillows from holofiber) - also a kind of recycling.

  When we have prepared a sufficient number of balls of the colors we need (I sewed the balls in the evenings in front of the TV), you can start gluing them with hot glue to the base of lutrasil (sold in construction and shops for summer residents). Of course, it was possible to sew them, but I'm too lazy ... According to my idea, there should have been a rainbow from above - I started from it.

  We glue the balls tightly in a checkerboard pattern, starting from the edge of our circle.

  The gluing process took place on the floor due to the size of the product. To avoid damage to the floor with hot glue, I put cardboard under the base.

  After gluing all the balls, according to the outline sketch, I sewed a mattress made of foam rubber with a diameter of 1 m and a thickness of 3-4 cm in the middle, stitching the foam rubber in oilcloth. To be honest, I just ran out of steam, and the reserves of my hamster came to an end.

  I sewed a round zipper pouch for a mattress from a fabric matching the pattern.

  Making a rug is a long and painstaking process, but the result is worth it! Now this is a favorite place for my granddaughter to play.
  This method can be used for the manufacture of other products. First, try to make a children's ottoman, perhaps it will decorate any children's room. This photo from the Internet prompted me to a bright thought that does not give me peace of mind!

  I wish you every success! Thank you for reading to the end!

Today our workshop will teach you how to crochet a rug from old T-shirts with your own hands. To create such a rug is not difficult, the main thing is to stock up with a sufficient number of unnecessary t-shirts. A step-by-step knitting scheme with a description and a photo will tell you how to make such a cute and necessary little thing in the house.

Tools and materials Time: 4-5 hours Difficulty: 4/10

  • 3-4 old t-shirts or leggings;
  • sharp scissors;
  • hook 12 mm;
  • sewing needles and threads (for correcting work and sewing ends).

Step by step description with photo

This cozy rug is not going to win any beauty contests. But if you're new to crocheting, this one small project  represents for you one big plus - homemade yarn will give it a rustic look, hiding any mistakes and shortcomings in the work. Use it as a convenient rug under the door or on the balcony, and when it gets dirty, just throw it into the washing machine.

The final rug size is approximately 50 cm x 37 cm.

Step 1: make yarn

Initially, you need to make yarn.

How to make yarn from an old T-shirt? Just pick up the scissors and cut the t-shirt into thin strips 1-2 cm wide. The thicker you cut the strips, the coarser your mat will come out and vice versa, the narrower the strips, the thinner and smaller loops your mat will come out. Therefore, initially decide what kind of rug you want - a rougher or finer work, and only then proceed with the manufacture of yarn.

When finished slicing, roll the strips into balls. The total amount of yarn depends on the future size of the rug and the size of the clothes. In any case, if you don’t have enough yarn, you can always take another T-shirt and cut it into strips as well.

Step 2: Tie the Mat

Start:  weave a chain of 40 stitches.

Row 1:  skip 1 stitch and tie a single crochet in 2 stitches. Next, crochet the single crochet stitches in all other stitches (total 39 stitches).

Row 2:  1 air loop, turn, skip 1 loop and then weave single crochet in all other loops.

To make the rug look more comfortable and harmonious, alternate the rows of yarn in colors.

To complete the work, weave the last row, cut the yarn, insert its end into the last stitch and hide it inside the weave.

A cozy home rug from old T-shirts with your own hands is ready! Write if you still have questions, and we hope that you enjoyed our workshop with a detailed description and diagram. Good luck!
