Stucco molding from plaster - we embody fantasies with our own hands. Stucco molding on the walls - as a way of decorative decoration

They are about 9000 years old. Gypsum was obtained by calcining gypsum stone, pulverized, and then mixed with water.

    The resulting solution had a lot of different methods of application:
  • it was used as a cushioning layer for the construction of Egyptian pyramids;
  • the same Egyptians used it to make columns and statues;
  • in Europe, builders actively used gypsum as a;
  • the Greeks used stucco made of plaster to decorate the temples.

In our country, gypsum molding became the most popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The main stages of the manufacture of gypsum elements

    Briefly, the whole process looks like this:
  • Creating a preliminary design of the product.
  • Creating a model is the most important stage, since it is she who becomes the model of the future decorative element. After the model is ready and approved, the form is removed from it, which then serves as the basis for the manufacture of the required number of such products. Models can be made of various materials  - gypsum, clay, plasticine, wax.
  • Creating a form based on a model (molding) is a difficult and very crucial stage. Forming is the process of removing terrain from a model. A well-made form makes it possible to produce products in large batches without loss of quality.
  • Casting products. At this stage, it is important to observe the technology very accurately, constantly monitor the quality of the gypsum mortar and the purity of the form.
  •   finished stucco moldings. It is important to choose the method of attachment in accordance with the dimensions and weight of the product, as well as the base material to which you want to attach the part.

Molds for molding stucco

    In ancient times the stucco molding did not cast, but was fashioned manually. This time-consuming process took too much time, so later the products began to be cast using molds from clay or gypsum. At the moment, two main types of forms are used:
  • Metal from or alloy steel - are difficult to manufacture, but very accurate and durable. Used for the manufacture of stucco elements in large quantities.
  • Silicone molds are less durable, but much easier to work with. Reliably reproduce the reliefs and drawings of the original. These forms are much cheaper and are often used for the manufacture of small batches of products. For self-use, this is just perfect. Such forms can be purchased at specialized companies, or you can try and make yourself, having a model of the original product.

DIY stucco molding

    In order to independently make stucco decoration for your home, you will need the following materials and tools:
  • a table or workbench with a verified horizontal surface on which molds for casting parts will be located;
  • high density film to protect the table and adjacent surfaces from contamination with gypsum;
  • beaker;
  • gypsum grade G-4 or higher;
  • cement - if it is planned to manufacture large elements;
  • mesh for reinforcing large parts;
  • release agent (can be bought at hardware stores or craft stores);
  • silicone and silicone oil;
  • tassel.

Before you start pouring the solution into the mold, it must be carefully lubricated with a release agent, otherwise the gypsum can adhere to the mold so firmly that it will be damaged when the product is removed.

Then a gypsum solution is prepared.

    Its composition is selected empirically. The consistency of the solution depends on the gypsum ratio:
  • a solution of normal density is obtained with a ratio of water and gypsum of 1: 1.5;
  • thick solution - ratio 1: 2;
  • liquid - 1: 1 ratio.

Important! In the manufacture of the solution, gypsum is poured into water (never do the opposite) evenly over the entire surface until islands of gypsum form in it and stand for 1 minute so that the gypsum can settle comfortably. Then the mixture is vigorously stirred until the solution acquires the consistency of sour cream. Dry gypsum and water are not added at this time so that clods do not form. For mixing, you can use a drill with a nozzle - mixer.

Too long stirring leads to disruption of the setting process of the solution, which is fraught with insufficient strength of the products. If the solution is not mixed enough, the structure of the products will be heterogeneous and the strength will also suffer.

It must also be remembered that gypsum hardens quite quickly - literally 3 minutes later, fluidity is lost, and after 7-8 minutes, plasticity is lost, so you need to dissolve it in water and fill it into the mold quickly. Do not dilute gypsum with warm water, then it hardens even faster.

If you want to increase the plasticity of the mixture, you can add a small amount of PVA glue previously dissolved in water to it. This reduces the likelihood of cracking stucco.

  It is desirable to apply the first layer of gypsum with a brush, and only then fill the form with a solution, while distributing it with vibrating movements throughout the volume. This will help to release air bubbles, the presence of which can lead to the appearance of small shells on the surface of the product. When the mold is filled, its surface is carefully leveled with

A medium-sized product dries in about 20 minutes. But if the product is large-sized, then it is better not to risk it and let it dry in the form from 1 to 4 hours.
  If the mold has been well coated with a release agent, then the dried element is easily removed. The finished stucco should be left to dry for about a day.

Finishing and painting stucco elements

When the elements extracted from their forms begin to turn white, it becomes possible to evaluate their quality and, if necessary, correct the flaws. Roughnesses and roughnesses must be removed using very fine emery cloth, and small shells should be filled with mortar.

To give greater decorativeness, as well as to protect products from contamination and facilitate care for it, it is recommended to paint stucco molding. You can paint it with various paints used to decorate the walls. To preserve the original snow-white color, stucco elements can be painted with white water-based paint. The paint is applied in 2 to 4 layers.

Before painting, it is necessary to impregnate the surface of the gypsum elements with a primer.
  For high-quality coloring, it is necessary to use only good quality - panel brushes or flets with soft fluffy bristles.
  They begin painting from the deepest places in order to avoid unpainted white areas that spoil the view.

Stucco molding

It is produced no earlier than two to three days after casting. In this case, you must first align the back surface of the products. To do this, they are placed on a piece of sandpaper and in 2 to 3 doses all burrs are removed.
  The base for attaching the stucco should also be flat. The surface is cleaned of deposits of dust and dirt and covered, consisting of water and PVA.

Small stucco is attached using a mixture based on PVA glue. The solution is prepared as follows: PVA is added to the water in a ratio of 6: 4. Then, G-10 grade gypsum is added to it in the amount necessary to achieve the consistency of sour cream.
These composition is smeared and the wall in the place of attachment and the reverse side of the stucco, then they are applied to each other and connected with small grinding movements. Then hold for about 5 minutes to glue securely. Excess glue is removed, and the joints between the stucco and the surface are puttyed with gypsum.

  Large products are attached not only to the fixing mixture, but also to the dowel-nails. In order to prevent the appearance of rust on the surface of the stucco molding, it is better to use anodized or galvanized nails. The holes from them are filled with gypsum and leveled.

Gypsum Decor Care

In its original version, gypsum is a porous material, so it easily absorbs moisture, dirt and soot, and can even become moldy. To prevent these phenomena, jewelry is best waxed or varnished. At the same time, the pores are closed, and the care of the stucco molding becomes much easier.
  But with any coating, gypsum still does not like water, so in damp rooms it is better to use stucco made from synthetic materials.

Methods for cleaning porous stucco

Decorating your home, making its interior original and unique is not difficult at all, especially if you know how to make stucco molding on the wall yourself.

  - an element that does not carry a functional load, but has a powerful aesthetic effect, capable of radically changing the appearance of a room, especially if its design is made in the modern or classic style.

Decorative stucco molding as an integral element of the interior

The use of stucco molding in the interior does not lose its relevance and popularity for several centuries. In modern conditions, it is actively used in the design of rooms not only in classical styles or in creating interiors of empire, barroco, it can be appropriate even in a minimalistic high-tech, but, of course, subject to the use of other lines and forms.

In the construction market, in addition to gypsum products, polyurethane and expanded polystyrene materials also gained wide popularity. Wooden products are also traditional, although their cost is much higher.

Despite the fact that buying ready-made elements for creating stucco moldings is not a problem, to create a truly unique interior, many owners prefer individual production.

Of course, it’s easiest to independently produce stucco moldings for decorating walls and ceilings if you have drawing skills, since you must first make an accurate sketch, carefully drawing all the lines and elements.

But, if there are ideas, you can contact them with a specialist who will perform this part of the work. And you can do it yourself directly with manufacturing, including the preparation of forms.

In addition, it should be noted that foam molding, despite the fact that it is a mass production product, in the presence of some artistic taste it may well become the basis for interior decoration.

Using different kinds  elements and combining them together, you can create original and beautiful compositions. Also, stucco made of this material is often used as a finishing accent when decorating walls in a room, neatly dividing zones among themselves.

The advantages of this material should be called it reasonable price, long service life and ease of installation.  It has similar characteristics and polyurethane stucco molding, which is often used when decorating modern rooms. Given that both of these materials are moisture resistant, they can be actively used in rooms with high humidity and temperature extremes.

Besides that stucco molding performs an aesthetic function,  its application can also have a purely utilitarian function, for example, visually hide some irregularities, cracks and other surface defects.

When used correctly in such cases, they will fit as organically as possible, giving the interior an additional a touch of nobility or exquisite charm.

Ideal for moldings

If the stucco molding is made with your own hands, then the most suitable material for this is gypsum. Among its advantages should be highlighted:

  • the natural origin of the material;
  • hypoallergenicity;
  • inertness to various microorganisms;
  • moisture resistance;
  • fire safety.

In addition, working with him is not difficult at all, although you will have to perform all operations as quickly as possible, since he freezes within 5-7 minutes and completely loses plasticity after another 5 minutes.

Of the obvious shortcomings, attention should be paid to big enough weight, which requires a careful selection of adhesive compositions for installation, as well as its fragility.

Made of plaster stucco molding in the interior  can be used to design ledges, columns, fireplace portal, create original reliefs on the walls or rosettes on the ceiling, etc.

DIY stucco molding: materials and tools for making

Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare a place, namely a flat surface, for example, a large table. Do not forget about the protection of surrounding objects - for this you can use ordinary film, which will not allow plaster and other building materials to get on the furniture upholstery, floor, etc.

Ideal, of course, to use for manufacturing special room  but not always there is such an opportunity, therefore, precautionary measures will not be out of place, since removing gypsum will subsequently be a rather difficult task.

At the very first stage, you will need a sheet of paper of the appropriate size and a pencil, in the future you will need the following materials and tools:

If the work is planned to be performed for the first time, it is recommended to start with small and simple in design products - this will help to feel the material and learn how to work with it.

But, before you begin, you will need to make sketches of future elements and molds for plaster moldingswhich are very easy to do on their own.

Sketch making

Sketch for future stucco molding manufactured in exact size,  and for convenience, you can preliminarily make a drawing on which the proportions of the future design are clearly visible.

You can create a sketch both from your own drawings, and from models from specialized literature or the Internet. It is imperative that you initially make a “reference to the territory”, that is, first “placing” future elements on the walls or ceiling. This will require roulette, as well as information about the laid communications.

If this criterion is not taken into account, serious problems can subsequently be encountered. For example, a part may turn out to be disproportionate or there may be a need for access to wiring, etc. It must be taken into account that the form and design should harmoniously fit into the general style of the room.

The finished sketch can eventually be drawn in full size on a sheet of paper of the appropriate size, but you can use modern technology - special graphics programs.

It is easy to print a sketch on several sheets on a regular printer, and then glue them, or contact specialized companies whose print format allows you to get a layout on sheets A1 or even A0.

After that, the shape of the future product is made of clay or clay in full size. According to it, the form in which plaster moldings  will be cast.

Form creation

A plasticine or gypsum mold is coated with a release agent, and then silicone diluted with a lubricant is applied to it with a brush. When performing this stage of work, special care should be taken and no bubbles should be formed that may subsequently affect the appearance of the product.

After applying the first layer of silicone, it should be strengthened with gauze, and then, after drying ( 2-3 hours later), you must repeat the procedure. As a result, the finished form should have a thickness of 3-4 mm, and this 2-3 layers of silicone and gauzebut for large forms, these parameters should be increased to 4-5 mm.

After final drying, the finished form is separated from the plasticine ( clay) sketch and is installed in a wooden box or on a frame. If a large form will pour out, then it is additionally required to fix it on the support with cement or alabaster, which will help withstand the large weight of the future product.

In order for the stucco molding on the walls or ceiling to have no defects and the finished product to be easily taken out of the mold, it is recommended that the latter be treated with release agent or colorless furniture varnish. After this, you can begin to fill in the form of the finished solution of gypsum.

Making gypsum mortar for stucco

Before proceeding to the most crucial stage, you should make sure that all materials and tools are at hand, since gypsum sets very quickly. To prepare the solution, you will need 10 parts of gypsum dry matter and 7 parts of water, which is poured in gradually, but quickly and thoroughly mixed using a drill with a mixer tip.

Next, you will need to add PVA glue (previously diluted in water) to the mixture ( approximately 1 part), which will give it plasticity and relieve further the finished product from cracking after drying. As a result, the mixture, ready for pouring into the mold, should have the consistency of thick sour cream.

After the gypsum mortar is poured into the mold, the surface is leveled with a spatula. This will further ensure a more snug fit to the wall or ceiling. It is especially important to pay attention to this moment if it will be fixed stucco molding on the ceiling, since in this case it is required getting the most reliable connection.

In the form of the product sets in about 15-20 minutes, depending on air temperature and humidity, after which it is carefully removed and left for 1-3 days to dry completely.

The final touch in the manufacture of stucco molding is the adjustment of its surface using fine sandpaper. With its help, it is easy to get rid of the characteristic roughness, you can eliminate small image defects, etc.

Since gypsum products have a considerable weight, it is recommended that the back side be treated with soil for better adhesion to the surface, and the painting net is fixed on large elements, after which they are also treated with primers.

Features of the installation of gypsum stucco

If used for repairs polyurethane stucco molding  or products made of polystyrene, then special adhesives are used for their fastening.

Pay attention to this material -

Gypsum products due to their weight require a more reliable and durable connection to the surface.

The surface must first be prepared accordingly: if necessary leveled and strengthened with mortars, and also necessarily processed with primers.

Do-it-yourself installation of stucco molding made by yourself should be started no earlier than three days after pouring into the mold. The points of fastening previously marked with a marker or pencil on the wall, ceiling or other structures are moistened and coated with PVA glue. The reverse side of the stucco elements is also processed in this way, after which they are fixed with the surface.

But this method is suitable only for fastening small elements - on massive parts, pre-prepared holes for fastening using self-tapping screws or screws. The drilling process should be carried out as carefully as possible, and subsequently the caps will need to be filled with plaster.

Also, plastering is required for large elements consisting of several parts. Seams after drying are necessarily processed with sandpaper.

The final touch - application of primer and paintwork  in accordance with the chosen style of the room and the color scheme of the interior.

Is stucco molding appropriate in a modern house? For most people, the first association with the term "stucco" is associated with pomp, luxury, something distant from ancient times. In fact, plaster or polyurethane embossed decorations fit perfectly into any modern interior.

The stucco molding looks great in styles: modern, atre-deco, avant-garde and even industrial or hi-tech. The main thing is to choose the right relief pattern, its location and color. It is not necessary that the moldings and decorations are white. They are easy to stain. Stucco molding can be created in the form of piece elements or directly on the surface of a wall or ceiling.

Making stucco moldings

Plaster stucco molding can be ordered by specialists, bought at a hardware store or made independently. The decor of this plan can be carved or cast. Plaster cutting requires a special, artistic skill.

But the injection method is available to everyone. You do not need to be a great specialist for this. The most difficult thing in this business is to pick up or make forms.

DIY stucco molding at home is made in the forms of factory production from silicone, latex, metal. But for small parts, you can make the equipment yourself from molding plasticine, and for the sample you can buy a ready-made gypsum outlet or a medallion.

  1. As the main material, ordinary building plaster of the G10 brand is used. It is diluted with water and stirred in any convenient way. A small amount of mortar can be made with a trowel or spatula, a large volume is prepared using a mixer or a drill with a nozzle. To improve ductility and reduce the risk of cracking of the product, PVA glue, lime or other plasticizer is added to the composition. The solution should have a consistency of thick sour cream.
  2. It is necessary to clean the mold and carefully cover the inner surface with silicone grease so that the product after solidification does not adhere to the snap-in and easily emerges from it without damage. It is not recommended to use a film or foil, in this case the relief pattern on the stucco made of gypsum can be blurry.
  3. Now you can pour the prepared mixture. Shake the mold to seal the mixture and align the back side.

It will take approximately 1-5 hours to dry, depending on the thickness of the part. After that, the product is released from the mold and left for a day for aging and final hardening. Then the product must be sanded and varnished or painted, if necessary.

The mold can be made by yourself from plasticine. For this, they usually use finished stucco. It is simply pressed into the plasticine mass, getting a relief print. It is subsequently lubricated with silicone grease and then the steps described above are repeated. Any of these methods are used to make decorative stucco, which is then attached to the walls, ceiling or other surfaces.

Sometimes to create a decor of an unusual form, they do without forms. A flat base (table can be) is lubricated with silicone and a rope soaked in gypsum mortar is laid on it in a certain order. To create several identical products, the drawing must first be done on paper. Then the rope will be laid out as it should. Then the structure is poured with a solution and it must be left to dry. The finished product is carefully removed from the table, brought to standard condition and it is suitable for fastening in place.

Stucco molding

If the embossed part has a complex configuration and large size and needs to be painted, then this is best done before installation. Although staining is not forbidden to perform after installation of stucco. Installation is performed in the following order:

  • First you need to prepare both surfaces: the back side of the stucco element and the base on which it will be mounted.
  • The back side of the product should be leveled and sanded. To do this, use sandpaper.
  • The surface of the base must be clean and even.
  • The adhesive composition is very simple: 60 percent water plus 40% PVA glue and gypsum grade G10 in such an amount that the resulting mixture had a very plastic consistency.
  • The resulting solution must be applied to the back of the stucco molding and to the base, after five minutes of exposure, press firmly.

Excess glue must be removed immediately before it sets. If the product has a significant weight, especially with stucco molding on the ceiling, then additional fastening is carried out with building dowels.

How to use stucco elements

Plaster molding is widely used for interior decoration, as well as the facades of country houses, cottages. A variety of panels, bas-reliefs, columns, capitals, pilasters, flowerpots will make any, even the simplest house, refined and exclusive. Stucco molding on the walls inside and outside the building often helps not only to decorate it, but also to hide minor defects and minor defects of builders. It is used for:

  • window and doorways, fireplaces and piers;
  • creating an interesting relief on the surface of the walls;
  • decoration of corner joints of walls with ceiling and floor, with LED strips (as an option);
  • the frames of mirrors, partitions, wall sconces, paintings and, in some cases, individual pieces of furniture.

The stucco ceiling deserves special attention. Molded decor elements can be located along the entire plane of the ceiling, or along its corners. A beautiful carved socket under the chandelier, combined with a lamp, transforms the ceiling and makes it especially attractive.

Initially, gypsum products are made white. But, depending on the design idea, the stucco molding in the interior can be painted in any color. The combination of white with silver or gold looks especially richly. For painting, water-based dyes or varnishes are usually used, giving the products a finished look and shine.

With the competent use of stucco decoration, it is possible to effectively emphasize the architecture of a separate room and the house as a whole. Plaster stucco molding gives a high definition of the ornament. Usually these are not template details, but real designer masterpieces. It is easy to restore and absolutely harmless for use in the decoration of any room, including bedrooms and children's rooms. Using decorative stucco molding in the interior, you can make your home unusual and very beautiful.

Relief on the contrary

There is another interesting way to create patterns and ornaments on wall and ceiling surfaces with a molding effect. They call it a counter-relief, because the pattern is created on a plaster basis by the method of cutting.

To do this, the contours of the pattern are applied to a smooth, carefully plastered wall using a pre-prepared stencil. Then, special tools (scrapers and knives of various shapes) are worked out drawing. The result is recesses that, against the general background, create a visual impression of a convex relief. Artistic coloring will help to emphasize the beauty of the created ornament.

One of the common options for the premises is the decoration of stucco made of gypsum. Since ancient times, elements of stucco decoration in the room are considered a sign of luxury, wealth, exclusivity and great taste. Historically, stucco molding made of gypsum was used to decorate window and doorways, built-in niches and other elements of luxurious mansions and estates. Modern technologies for making stucco molding from gypsum ensure its availability for any buyer.

Unique features of stucco decoration

Decorative stucco elements made of gypsum differ not only in beauty, aesthetics and sophistication, but also in practicality. On the one hand, a correctly selected stucco decoration will emphasize the features and advantages of the room’s interior, and on the other, it will help to hide flaws or errors in the construction and decoration of the room, as well as non-aesthetic elements of heat and water supply systems (for example, cracks, joints, pipes, batteries, ventilation grilles, etc.). In addition, massive elements of stucco decoration (for example, columns) will help to divide the rooms into several functional zones, visually increase, expand or narrow the inner space, to make it more voluminous and embossed.

The modern range of stucco decorative elements allows you to use them for the design of walls, corners, ceilings, internal door and window openings, individual niches and empty space, additional decoration of elements of the lighting system (sockets, shades, chandeliers, switches, etc.). Plaster stucco decoration is very popular in the field of interior design due to the following main factors:

  • Ecological cleanliness.  Gypsum is a natural material, respectively, does not contain toxic and allergic compounds, such as synthetic decor. Due to the natural chemical composition, gypsum passes air and moisture, thereby providing natural ventilation, which positively affects the psychological and physical condition of a person.
  • Durability.  Stucco made of gypsum is practically not subject to wear, and with proper care and timely restoration will last up to hundreds of years. Gypsum stucco decoration perfectly tolerates temperature changes, practically does not lose strength and does not shrink the composition.
  • Low fire hazard.  Due to its chemical composition and relatively hollow structure, gypsum practically does not conduct heat, and accordingly it does not burn.
  • Design variation.  Plaster decorative products are a huge field for creativity, because stucco decoration can have absolutely any size and shape, even the most bizarre (from the right geometric shapes to vines, sea shells, cornucopia, etc.). At the same time, it is very easy to “revive”, give bright colors to stucco molding with the help of paints and varnishes, gilding technology, etc.

For many centuries of use, decorative plaster stucco elements have established themselves as a reliable, original and elegant designer decoration of a room. Typically, stucco moldings are used to decorate interiors in classic style. At the same time, decorative stucco molding allows you to create the impression of styling a room for historical periods, bringing a sense of harmony, sophistication, and wealth into the interior. However, now many designers use stucco gypsum elements when decorating a room in styles, minimalism, pop art, as well as combining them, which gives the space originality, extravagance, originality.

Technology for the production of stucco decorative elements

On the modern decor market, gypsum stucco, as a rule, is an architectural form of the following type: cornices, rods, sockets, corners, moldings, friezes, fireplaces, brackets, arches, capitals, pilasters, columns, ornaments, etc. The technology for the production of this stucco decor involves the following standard steps:

  • development of a model of the future decorative element in three-dimensional graphics;
  • modeling of the design model from plasticine;
  • production (on the basis of the design model) of a mold for the tint of a decorative element;
  • outflow of a decorative element.

An exception to this sequence of stucco molding production is handmade stucco decoration. Hand molded elements are performed directly on the decorated surface using thread technology. More massive and other standard elements of stucco molding are cast separately in special blanks (metal or silicone). Handmade stucco decoration is mainly made to order, and its shape, size, texture and other characteristics depend solely on the wishes of the customer.

For example, stucco elements can be stylized as marble, antiquity, repeating absolutely any texture. In any version, hand-made decorative molding will give an elegant, luxurious and respectable appearance, both to the external and internal space of the room.

Plaster stucco installation

Features of the installation technology of decorative stucco elements are determined by the shape and weight of the latter:

  • Small-sized decorative plaster products  - are mounted using adhesive bases (for example, PVA glue). Prior to applying the adhesive, the reverse surface of the stucco element must be sanded with sandpaper. Only after grinding, glue is applied to the back surface and applied to the installation site, holding for 2-3 minutes.
  • Oversized stucco products  - are mounted using adhesive mixtures (prepared by specialists immediately before installation) and galvanized screws (prevents rust). Before installing stucco moldings, the reverse side of the product and the surface on which the fasteners will be made should be moist and treated with PVA glue. After the decorative element is planted on the adhesive, it is secured with galvanized screws, each of which is screwed at a distance of 20-25 centimeters.
  • Installation of columns and pilasters  - the most labor-intensive and technologically complex process, which must be performed by at least two installers. A column of two parts is mounted, which are glued together with masking tape. Next, the cavity of the finished column is filled with gypsum chips. Filling should take place in stages (the filling level is not more than 20 centimeters at a time) so that the gypsum structure does not crack or move.
  • Finishing and grouting  can be carried out 2 days after the main stage of installation. If you plan to further decorate gypsum stucco, then a day after installation, the product must be treated with a special acrylic primer. Acrylic primer will not only facilitate the process of coating the product with paints and varnishes, but also protect it from damage.
Stucco decoration

Decorative gypsum stucco in itself is a very beautiful and status element of interior design. However, the modern sphere of decoration allows for further decoration of stucco plaster elements. Art decorating of gypsum stucco molding is carried out using the following technologies:

  • Toning - involves giving a certain shade of stucco molding, which will be in harmony with the overall interior.
  • Single and multi-color painting, including gilding and silvering, will breathe life into the stucco decoration. Plaster molding will sparkle with colorful tints and mysterious, eye-catching shades.
  • - It looks especially elegant on plaster moldings. Depending on the theme in which the stucco decoration is made and the general interior, it can be decorated with geometric shapes, landscapes, still lifes, etc.
  • Artificial imparting of the effect of “aging” - looks very impressive in the classic design of the room. Visually worn stucco elements give aristocratic nobility to the interior decoration of the room.
  • Giving a given texture (marble, stone, porcelain, metal, etc.) is also aimed at harmonizing sculpting with the overall interior.
  • For example, if marble elements are present in the space of a room, then a stucco decoration with a marble texture will give a finished appearance to a stylistic concept.

A huge amount of modern paints and varnishes (varnishes, paints, toners, waxes, etc.) allows artists and craftsmen to decorate compositions from stucco elements with various shades of colors and application techniques. In addition, painted or tinted stucco elements can change colors depending on the angle of illumination in the room, which allows you to create truly exclusive interiors that reflect the atmosphere and mood of the owners.

From gypsum, you can make a variety of options for ceiling and wall moldings. However, the finished decor elements are quite heavy, which is not always convenient.

So, we will proceed directly to the manufacture of stucco moldings for your interior.

Do-it-yourself stucco molding

To make a full stucco molding as in a store, you need to stock up on some equipment for its manufacture. First of all, you will need spatulas and sculpting tools to help you achieve the perfect shape of your product.

In addition, for the manufacture of stucco molding it is necessary:

  • A flat table of sufficient size, where the work itself and the further hardening of the gypsum will take place.
  • Film to protect the table from dust and gypsum mortar.
  • Building clay or plastic clay.
  • Building plaster and special PVA glue.
  • Silicone oil or just silicone.
  • Cement.

It’s better to start with simple elements, gradually moving to more complex ones. If you don’t have experience with plaster, start with small plaster sockets and elements.

So you can feel the material and its features, understand whether you can master the production of complex stucco elements for your interior, and whether they will look good enough.

Please note that the table on which you will work must be perfectly flat, without a bias. If the table is even slightly tilted, the work may be ruined.

You need to start work with a sketch. You must choose which item you want to make. To do this, you can refer to drawings on the Internet or to books for designers. can be varied, so it is important for you to make the right choice.

The size of the future product is also important here. The selected sketch must be printed in full size. Now, according to the drawing, you should fashion a little more from the building clay than the model shown in the figure.

This is perhaps the most laborious and complex process, inaccessible to a person who does not have special training.

If you are not confident in your own abilities, do it easier, take the finished polyurethane stucco molding from the store. You can select the desired element and add something of your own using the same building clay.

From the finished sketch you need to make a form. The easiest and most affordable way to do this is from silicone. Previously, your plasticine mold must be lubricated with some vegetable oil so that the silicone easily leaves.

Now silicone and silicone oil are mixed to a uniform consistency and are carefully applied with a brush to the sketch. Spread all the grooves, cracks and pores with the mixture so that there are no gaps.

Use the brush as carefully as possible so that no air bubbles form under the silicone. Gauze is carefully applied over the first layer of silicone, not too tightly, but not too weakly.

After the first layer has dried, a second, third, and so on is applied until the form is at least three millimeters thick. After final drying, the mold can be removed from the base.

Now it remains only to prepare the gypsum solution and pour it into the mold. Keep in mind that gypsum diluted with water very quickly loses fluidity and ductility, so you need to act quickly.

A small amount of PVA glue is added to the solution to add a little plasticity to it. The solution is poured into our mold, pre-oiled. For a complete drying of stucco moldings are needed a day.

Then the finished decor element is easily removed from the form.
