What to attach the salon mirror to the glass on. How and how to glue a rearview mirror on the windshield.

The rearview mirror, which is in every car, does not have such a reliable mount as we would like. As a result of constant shaking and vibrations that occur when driving, or as a result of the awkwardness of passengers, this mirror may come off and fall off. Even the owners of the most expensive and high-quality cars can face such a problem, since the glue that holds this part dries up and loses its quality over time ...

If the rearview mirror has fallen - this is not at all a cause for panic. The most reliable solution will be to go to the nearest car service, where such a problem is solved very quickly. But you can do this on your own, but for this you need to know how to properly and how to glue a rearview mirror.

Adhesive Selection

If necessary, glue the rear-view mirror on the moment glue and similar brands to the windshield, you must immediately forget. Such adhesives are not designed for loads with constant vibration, so the part will disappear after the first trip by car or even while driving.

Also, the option of using double-sided tape, which is not able to support the weight of the mirror, and tearing it off the glass, is not suitable - this is not a pleasant occupation.

One suitable option is the use of epoxy. The part glued in this way will hold well, but using the substance is inconvenient. It takes 10 to 24 hours for the epoxy to fully set, and it is quite difficult to secure the mirror for such a time.

The most best options  adhesives for use for this purpose are as follows:

  • Loctite 319, there is a special gasket that provides reliable protection against temperature extremes;

  • Permatex 81840 or 81844, in the kit has a special cloth for cleaning glued surfaces;

  • DoneDeal DD6588 or DD6587;

  • KR-152, An-110 and 105 are domestic and not very expensive products that are of good quality.

Thus, in order to qualitatively solve the problem with a fallen off interior part, you need to use only high-quality and specially designed adhesives that allow you to reliably glue the rear view mirror.

How to glue a mirror

Before starting the process of gluing the mirror, it is necessary to carefully prepare the surfaces to be glued - this is a reliable guarantee that the mirror will remain in its place for a very long time. It should be noted that the part bracket itself is rarely glued directly to the glass; First, a special metal base is glued to it, to which the bracket itself is mounted.

It is best to carry out all the work in warm time, when the air temperature is at least 20 degrees. If there is a need to do everything in the winter - the car should be driven into a heated garage or at least warm the interior with a stove.

The most correct option for the location of the mirror is exactly the middle of the windshield. To do this, it is best to make a marker in the right place on the outside, which will be clearly visible from the inside.

Sometimes there are situations when a fallen bracket pulls out the top layer of glass. In this case, the part will have to be glued not exactly in the center of the glass, but a little to the side.

Having decided on the place where the mirror will be located, you can proceed to the next step - removing the remnants of the previous adhesive from both surfaces. It is easiest to do this on the glass surface by mechanical cleaning with a knife or razor blade. The metal base of the bracket can be preheated with a hairdryer or with the help of a conventional gas stove - the glue will be cleaned off much easier.

The next step is to roughen the surfaces. This is done using ordinary fine sandpaper. No need to try to roughen the surface of the glass - it is enough to achieve a slight opacification of the area to which the part will be attached.

Next, it is necessary to completely degrease the surface of the glass and the base. The usual rubbing them with a rag soaked in acetone, does not lead to the removal of fat, and its smearing on the glass. To do everything qualitatively, you need to use two pieces of a clean rag: one of them, previously moistened in acetone, dissolves the fat, the second - clean, all residual dirt is removed.

After completing this stage of work, everything will be ready for gluing. It is recommended that you adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions for the adhesive.

Among the general (for all glues) tips, it should be noted that the activator is best applied to glass, and adhesive to the base of the bracket. Usually, a copper salt dissolved in acetone is used as an activator. Such a composition is completely safe for glass, so you can safely apply it with a margin, and not just exactly on the area to which the mirror will be glued.

Most often, adhesives for the rear-view mirror of the machine do not dry instantly, so it is necessary to ensure reliable fixation of the base of the bracket to the glass while the glue dries. This can be provided with a strong magnet on the outside of the glass. In addition, you can use ordinary tape or plasticine.

It is advisable to mount the mirror on a glued base no earlier than in a day - this time is enough for the glue to completely dry.

Back view

Correctly positioned and tuned mirrors significantly increase traffic safety - after all, viewing backward while moving and maneuvering is no less important than visibility forward. Auto designers and designers have a difficult task: on the one hand, to make the exterior mirror large to provide a good overview, but at the same time take into account the requirements of aerodynamics. Therefore, more and more often mirrors “fit” into the contours of the body and “finish” in the wind tunnel, achieving not only the least resistance, but also minimal pollution in bad weather. The exterior mirror has significant “dead zones”. Spherical and panoramic increase the viewing angle, but at the same time distort the real distance to objects, which can easily mislead an inexperienced driver. Sometimes the mirror is made integral: have a small portion of it at an angle to the main one. On sale you can also find small spherical "spots" that are glued to the main surface to eliminate all the same "dead zones".

Where is more convenient?

Typically, the mirrors are located at the front pillar - so the viewing sector turns out to be maximum. At the same time, they should not be at eye level, so as not to limit the visibility forward-side - let it be better a little lower or higher. On some (mostly old) cars, there are mirrors on the front wings. They are farther from the eyes, and the view through them is worse, in addition, they are more difficult to regulate. But there are pluses: you can simultaneously keep the situation in view both in the front and on the sides - this is useful for emergency maneuvering. For example, when rearranging to the right row to search for a “hole”, you usually have to turn your head, while losing sight of the horn. The wing mirror allows you to track the situation with lateral vision.

Fasten the mirror

Internal rear-view mirrors in modern cars have long been fixed with adhesive bonding directly to the windshield. Among other advantages, the use of glue frees from binding the mirror to a specific place (holes, floor, self-tapping screws of the bracket). There is an opportunity to place it where it is convenient for the driver, and if the staffer for some reason does not suit you, you can choose any other. It is also easy to “hang” an additional mirror to eliminate the “dead zone”, or even just for passengers in the front seat - because, as you know, they have their own plans for using this piece of glass.

Special adhesives have been developed for mounting mirrors. They are subject to special requirements. So, “mirror” glue should quickly “grab” (within 2-3 minutes), since it is impossible to use a vise or clamp that is familiar in everyday life to fix the parts to be joined. In addition, the windshield is subject to constant vibrations and temperature changes - this is also taken into account when creating compositions

We select glue

When choosing glue, the “the stronger, the better” approach is not always justified

Until recently, the range of adhesives on the shelves of Ukrainian stores was represented only by products of Western manufacturers. Today on sale you can also find Russian tubes (there are no Ukrainian ones yet. Although we will be glad to make a mistake), and they may differ in their properties. For example, the An-105 meets all conditions and provides a fairly strong connection.

Two-component adhesives are the most popular. Practice shows that if a driver who is “tightly” glued on a mirror accidentally hits the driver’s head or decides to “hang” the child left alone in the car, it is likely that a fragment of the windshield will fly off along with the mirror. In the best case, cracks will appear on its inner surface, which in the near future can grow to the edges of the glass. Therefore, experts advise using less strong adhesives, which provide reliable joints, but at the same time, are destroyed by significant mechanical stress (An-110).

Gluing is best done in a warm room (or at least in a well-heated cabin). Bicomponent adhesives are mixed in a 1: 1 ratio, and dosage accuracy is optional. After 15 minutes, the composition reaches 70% of its strength, however, it is recommended to install the mirror on the plate only after a day. The remnants of the finished glue can be used for other purposes, including household ones: it is great for ceramics, plastics and even metals. Limitations of its use in a car can be imposed only by a limited temperature range of operation, but usually it is quite large (for An - from -60 to + 150 ° C).

There are also one-component adhesives, for example, "Quant-401". To cure it, you need a special lamp, which, of course, is far from every car owner.

When buying imported adhesives, note that the use of most of them implies the presence of an activator (hardener), which may not be included.

If a the rearview mirror fell off, and this can happen at the most inopportune moment, the question arises - how to stick it back, and so that it does not fall off again. Most often, this object necessary for safe driving disappears as a result of mechanical stress, for example, a mirror is accidentally touched by hand or head.

It can disappear by itself, especially in heat or cold, due to the temperature expansion of the glass and the mirror bracket. In order to return the mirror to its place, it is not necessary to contact a car dealership, you can use modern adhesive compositions and self-adhesive.

What glue to glue the rearview mirror

In factories, special reflective glue is used for this purpose, which hardens under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. This makes it possible in time to "catch" the moment when the glue sets well. Ultraviolet is supplied by powerful lamps.

Such glue is also sold in ordinary stores, but you should not use it without a special lamp, since you will not achieve the desired result. And even more so, there will be no effect when applying glue on the street under the influence of the sun even in the most cloudless weather, such ultraviolet light will not allow the mixture to freeze.

In this regard, for home use, experts recommend chemical curing adhesives. Conventional mixtures for gluing rear-view glass are completely unsuitable, so you should not spend time, money and effort on them. This is especially true for BF-2 and Moment adhesives and the like, since the adhesive will retain its plasticity and soften.

Double-sided tape, as well as crystallizing compounds such as super glue, second glue, will not be effective. The resulting adhesive joint will quickly crack under the influence of gravity and very soon the mirror will fall off again.

Epoxy gives average results and is suitable only for temporary use, when the mirror needs to be glued urgently somewhere on the road.

Some manufacturers produce specialized adhesive for rear-view mirrors, but in view of the high requirements for them (quick setting, increased strength, transparency), their cost can be quite high.

These include the following:

  • Among the best options you can highlight products from Loctite. So sets Loctite 37438 and Loctite 03346. They contain glue and an activator. The Loctite 37438 kit is enough for one to two times use. In Loctite 03346, the activator is presented in the form of an aerosol, so about ten mirrors can be glued to them. This is a good option for use by masters in car service.
  • You can also consider Loctite 319, which comes with a special pad soaked in activator. Its price of about 800 rubles is one of the most optimal options for home use.
  • Still inexpensive kits are Permatex 81840 and Permatex 81844 with a special cloth impregnated with an activating composition. The price starts from 400 rubles.
  • About 500 rubles are 3M - 08752 and 08749 with a liquid activator, about 300 rubles DoneDeal - DD6587 and DD6588 Kits.
  • Among domestic products, we can distinguish adhesives KR-152, An-105 and An-110. There are also cheap acrylic Chinese adhesives at 40-60 rubles, but the quality of gluing them is rather dubious.
  • Also, many drivers use universal poxipol epoxy adhesive  worth about 150 rubles. The transparent composition, judging by the reviews, copes well with its task.

If you do not want the mirror to fall off the next day, it is better not to save money and buy glue more expensive.

How to glue a rearview mirror on a windshield - step-by-step instruction

VIDEO INSTRUCTION

  • Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the surface. The mirror is usually not glued directly to the glass, use a metal patch. It is glued to the glass, and then the mirror is directly attached.
  • It is difficult to adhere glass without using such intermediate layers, therefore it is very important to detach the metal plate from the bracket. Sometimes a latch or screw is used for fastening, sometimes you need to slightly turn or tilt it.

Pokleyka is best done in warm weather at 20-25C or in a room, such as a heated garage. In extreme cases, warm the interior with a stove.

  1. The next step is to make the markings on the glass with a marker, best of all from the back of the glass, from there it will be easy to wash off. If you do not remember where the mirror was located, and there were no traces left, refer to the car repair manual of your brand.
  2. If a piglet tore off almost all the glass on the surface, then you have to glue the mirror a little to the side. Another option is to build up this patch or make a metal pad of a slightly larger size by attaching it with rivets to an existing patch.
  3. Next, remove the old glue from the surfaces with a sharpened knife or blade. The easiest way is to remove the glue if you preheat the patch with an industrial hairdryer or hold it over a gas stove.
  4. Then you need to create a rough surface on both metal and glass. This will require sanding paper. The main thing is not to overdo it, it is enough to achieve a slight haze in the gluing area.
  5. Next, the surface is degreased with two pieces of cloth. The first is wetted in acetone and treated with a surface, and the second is wiped dry. When everything dries, you can proceed directly to gluing.

It is important to strictly adhere to the manufacturer's instructions. The general recommendation for any formulations is the application of adhesive on the mirror pad, and the activator on glass. You can attach a plasticine grip to the patch of metal, which will help not to drop and at the same time glue the mirror evenly, and then it will be easy to remove.

To glue dry faster, a strong magnet will help. You can use a hard drive from a computer that needs to be attached outside the glass. So that the magnet does not slip, it is wrapped with thin rubber, for example, from a balloon, or with adhesive tape. If the whole mirror is glued, you will have to take care of installing some spacers.

How to glue a heated rearview mirror

The main difference between a conventional rear-view mirror and a heated mirror is only the presence of heating elements, and the gluing process itself remains similar. For bonding, you can use the above compositions of trusted manufacturers.

The gluing procedure is as follows:

  1. Decide on a place for sticking - find the center of the glass.
  2. To clear surfaces, to remove the remains of old glue.
  3. If a marking grid is included with the glue, install it in the place for fastening.
  4. Disassemble the mirror, since only the bracket needs to be glued.
  5. To put glue on a place of fixture and in 10 seconds to connect surfaces.
  6. After a day, install the mirror in place and wait for the polymerization of the composition.

Ventilating the cabin or riding with the windows down will help get rid of the unpleasant odor in the cabin.

Glue the mirror to the windshield  - It seems to be a simple question, but you will not immediately give an answer to it. Of course, we can say that gluing with a sufficiently universal glue, but this is not enough for a long time. Constant vibrations, sunlight or low temperature - these factors do not allow a mirror to stay on glass for a long time. Withstand only a special two-component adhesive. It is easy to find him, this is not about that.

Glass bonding

This special glue is designed to withstand not only the mass of the mirror itself, but also the knocking down of a sloppy passenger, heating under the sun and moisture from rains. It is necessary to glue the mirror in a place where the sun's rays do not fall during operation. Ideal when the temperature does not exceed 20 degrees.

Special glue

The process of gluing a mirror

First you need to prepare the glass. On the inside, you need to thoroughly clean it from dust and dirt, degrease the surface. For convenience, on the outside of the glass you need to stick a piece of tape or tape, so that there is a marking where to glue the mirror.

This place needs to be cleaned

For a firm glue setting, a mesh is supplied with it; you need to cut a piece of the same size as the mirror support. Then rubbed with alcohol that part of the glass on which the mirror will be glued. After that, a thin layer of glue is applied to the glass, a mesh and a mirror leg are applied. Having correctly positioned the base of the mirror on the glass, leave it all alone for about 15 minutes. Then you can clean the glass of the remaining glue, so carefully so as not to touch the mirror. Then it is advisable to leave the car for a day without movement, so that the mirror is firmly fixed on the glass. After that, you can remove the adhesive tape from the outside of the glass and remove all glue residue.

Glued footrest

Usually, for the glue to dry completely, it is necessary to wait about a day. You can do a glue test: squeeze a strip of glue onto a cardboard, create the same conditions in which the mirror was glued, and after a day cut off the glue and see if it hardens. Of course, you can increase the temperature so that the glue dries faster. But then its properties will deteriorate.

Also, do not forget about safety precautions: work only in a ventilated area, do not mix different types of glue and apply to one glass, do not use expired glue, work with gloves to avoid glue getting on the skin.
