If the rearview mirror has fallen - this is not at all a cause for panic. The most reliable solution will be to go to the nearest car service, where such a problem is solved very quickly. But you can do this on your own, but for this you need to know how to properly and how to glue a rearview mirror.

One suitable option is the use of epoxy. The part glued in this way will hold well, but using the substance is inconvenient. It takes 10 to 24 hours for the epoxy to fully set, and it is quite difficult to secure the mirror for such a time.

The most best options adhesives for use for this purpose are as follows:

Loctite 319, there is a special gasket that provides reliable protection against temperature extremes;

Permatex 81840 or 81844, in the kit has a special cloth for cleaning glued surfaces;

DoneDeal DD6588 or DD6587;

KR-152, An-110 and 105 are domestic and not very expensive products that are of good quality.

Thus, in order to qualitatively solve the problem with a fallen off interior part, you need to use only high-quality and specially designed adhesives that allow you to reliably glue the rear view mirror.

How to glue a mirror

Before starting the process of gluing the mirror, it is necessary to carefully prepare the surfaces to be glued - this is a reliable guarantee that the mirror will remain in its place for a very long time. It should be noted that the part bracket itself is rarely glued directly to the glass; First, a special metal base is glued to it, to which the bracket itself is mounted.

It is best to carry out all the work in warm time, when the air temperature is at least 20 degrees. If there is a need to do everything in the winter - the car should be driven into a heated garage or at least warm the interior with a stove.

The most correct option for the location of the mirror is exactly the middle of the windshield. To do this, it is best to make a marker in the right place on the outside, which will be clearly visible from the inside.

Sometimes there are situations when a fallen bracket pulls out the top layer of glass. In this case, the part will have to be glued not exactly in the center of the glass, but a little to the side.

Having decided on the place where the mirror will be located, you can proceed to the next step - removing the remnants of the previous adhesive from both surfaces. It is easiest to do this on the glass surface by mechanical cleaning with a knife or razor blade. The metal base of the bracket can be preheated with a hairdryer or with the help of a conventional gas stove - the glue will be cleaned off much easier.

The next step is to roughen the surfaces. This is done using ordinary fine sandpaper. No need to try to roughen the surface of the glass - it is enough to achieve a slight opacification of the area to which the part will be attached.

Next, it is necessary to completely degrease the surface of the glass and the base. The usual rubbing them with a rag soaked in acetone, does not lead to the removal of fat, and its smearing on the glass. To do everything qualitatively, you need to use two pieces of a clean rag: one of them, previously moistened in acetone, dissolves the fat, the second - clean, all residual dirt is removed.

After completing this stage of work, everything will be ready for gluing. It is recommended that you adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions for the adhesive.

Among the general (for all glues) tips, it should be noted that the activator is best applied to glass, and adhesive to the base of the bracket. Usually, a copper salt dissolved in acetone is used as an activator. Such a composition is completely safe for glass, so you can safely apply it with a margin, and not just exactly on the area to which the mirror will be glued.

Most often, adhesives for the rear-view mirror of the machine do not dry instantly, so it is necessary to ensure reliable fixation of the base of the bracket to the glass while the glue dries. This can be provided with a strong magnet on the outside of the glass. In addition, you can use ordinary tape or plasticine.

It is advisable to mount the mirror on a glued base no earlier than in a day - this time is enough for the glue to completely dry.

Until recently, the range of adhesives on the shelves of Ukrainian stores was represented only by products of Western manufacturers. Today on sale you can also find Russian tubes (there are no Ukrainian ones yet. Although we will be glad to make a mistake), and they may differ in their properties. For example, the An-105 meets all conditions and provides a fairly strong connection.

Two-component adhesives are the most popular. Practice shows that if a driver who is “tightly” glued on a mirror accidentally hits the driver’s head or decides to “hang” the child left alone in the car, it is likely that a fragment of the windshield will fly off along with the mirror. In the best case, cracks will appear on its inner surface, which in the near future can grow to the edges of the glass. Therefore, experts advise using less strong adhesives, which provide reliable joints, but at the same time, are destroyed by significant mechanical stress (An-110).

Gluing is best done in a warm room (or at least in a well-heated cabin). Bicomponent adhesives are mixed in a 1: 1 ratio, and dosage accuracy is optional. After 15 minutes, the composition reaches 70% of its strength, however, it is recommended to install the mirror on the plate only after a day. The remnants of the finished glue can be used for other purposes, including household ones: it is great for ceramics, plastics and even metals. Limitations of its use in a car can be imposed only by a limited temperature range of operation, but usually it is quite large (for An - from -60 to + 150 ° C).

There are also one-component adhesives, for example, "Quant-401". To cure it, you need a special lamp, which, of course, is far from every car owner.

When buying imported adhesives, note that the use of most of them implies the presence of an activator (hardener), which may not be included.

If a the rearview mirror fell off, and this can happen at the most inopportune moment, the question arises - how to stick it back, and so that it does not fall off again. Most often, this object necessary for safe driving disappears as a result of mechanical stress, for example, a mirror is accidentally touched by hand or head.

It can disappear by itself, especially in heat or cold, due to the temperature expansion of the glass and the mirror bracket. In order to return the mirror to its place, it is not necessary to contact a car dealership, you can use modern adhesive compositions and self-adhesive.

What glue to glue the rearview mirror

In factories, special reflective glue is used for this purpose, which hardens under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. This makes it possible in time to "catch" the moment when the glue sets well. Ultraviolet is supplied by powerful lamps.

Such glue is also sold in ordinary stores, but you should not use it without a special lamp, since you will not achieve the desired result. And even more so, there will be no effect when applying glue on the street under the influence of the sun even in the most cloudless weather, such ultraviolet light will not allow the mixture to freeze.

In this regard, for home use, experts recommend chemical curing adhesives. Conventional mixtures for gluing rear-view glass are completely unsuitable, so you should not spend time, money and effort on them. This is especially true for BF-2 and Moment adhesives and the like, since the adhesive will retain its plasticity and soften.

Double-sided tape, as well as crystallizing compounds such as super glue, second glue, will not be effective. The resulting adhesive joint will quickly crack under the influence of gravity and very soon the mirror will fall off again.

Epoxy gives average results and is suitable only for temporary use, when the mirror needs to be glued urgently somewhere on the road.

Some manufacturers produce specialized adhesive for rear-view mirrors, but in view of the high requirements for them (quick setting, increased strength, transparency), their cost can be quite high.

Among the best options you can highlight products from Loctite. So sets Loctite 37438 and Loctite 03346. They contain glue and an activator. The Loctite 37438 kit is enough for one to two times use. In Loctite 03346, the activator is presented in the form of an aerosol, so about ten mirrors can be glued to them. This is a good option for use by masters in car service.
You can also consider Loctite 319, which comes with a special pad soaked in activator. Its price of about 800 rubles is one of the most optimal options for home use.
Still inexpensive kits are Permatex 81840 and Permatex 81844 with a special cloth impregnated with an activating composition. The price starts from 400 rubles.
About 500 rubles are 3M - 08752 and 08749 with a liquid activator, about 300 rubles DoneDeal - DD6587 and DD6588 Kits.
Among domestic products, we can distinguish adhesives KR-152, An-105 and An-110. There are also cheap acrylic Chinese adhesives at 40-60 rubles, but the quality of gluing them is rather dubious.
Also, many drivers use universal poxipol epoxy adhesive worth about 150 rubles. The transparent composition, judging by the reviews, copes well with its task.

If you do not want the mirror to fall off the next day, it is better not to save money and buy glue more expensive.

You can attach a plasticine grip to the patch of metal, which will help not to drop and at the same time glue the mirror evenly, and then it will be easy to remove.

To glue dry faster, a strong magnet will help. You can use a hard drive from a computer that needs to be attached outside the glass. So that the magnet does not slip, it is wrapped with thin rubber, for example, from a balloon, or with adhesive tape. If the whole mirror is glued, you will have to take care of installing some spacers.
